Witness Information

Witnesses to an accident are very important to the overall success of the claim and determining who is at fault. Obtaining this information yourself at the scene is very important as police reports routinely redact this information under the guise of privacy concerns for the people involved. However, if the other driver rethinks his or her story about what happened after they get home and talk to the insurance company, then you as the claimant have the burden of proving what happened. The best way to do this is through independent witnesses.

Also, you need to be aware that witnesses rarely, if ever, see the whole accident. Often you have to piece together the full story from pieces and parts of what different witnesses say. There is no shortcut to proper preparation and investigation of a claim. See our section about The Basics of an Accident Claim for more information.
